Pendant “Head of the Scheldt”

The pendant is inspired by the carved ship’s figurehead raised from the River Scheldt in Belgium.
This oak carving, dating from the 4th–5th centuries AD, once adorned the bow of a vessel.
It depicts a fearsome mythical creature with a gaping mouth, eyes, and teeth.
Such figures were believed to serve as talismans — warding off evil spirits
and protecting the ship during voyages across unknown waters.

The artifact stands as a testament to a transitional era — between the late Roman and early Germanic periods —
a time that paved the way for the later art of the Vikings.
Today, the original “Head of the Scheldt” is preserved in the British Museum —
a silent witness to the ancient sailors’ faith in the power of symbols and the spirit of the sea.
