Material

Adorned with sapphires, this pendant depicts the carnyx —
an ancient Celtic war horn used as a psychological weapon
from around 300 BC to 200 AD.
Crafted from a long bronze tube bent at right angles,
its upper end — the bell — was shaped like the head of an animal,
often a boar with tusks and a fierce snout.
The towering height of the instrument carried its eerie, resonant sound
above the warriors’ ranks —
a call to unity for the Celts, and a sound of terror for their foes.
One of the most famous carnyces was discovered in Tintignac, France,
and today rests in the National Museum of History in Paris.
